Today, we discussed lost procedures. I was to fly over the town of New Windsor, reduce speed to 90 knots and begin circling the town. I was to tune in 2 VORs and plot the radials on the chart and locate my approximate location. This didn't seem too difficult as I've done this on the simulator. So we departed on runway 34 and made a 200 degree turn toward New Windsor. When over the town, I completed the above steps. Then we followed a road back toward DMW.
At this point my instructor had me close my eyes for a few minutes while he got me "lost." After he had me open my eyes, I saw a large body of water and didn't know where I was. I changed the heading indicator to match the compass after he rotated it 90 degrees. I compared my true course to the sun which I approxmiated in the Southwestern sky. I looked around and found a town that we crossed over, so I turned toward the town and began circling it. I tuned the EMI VOR and plotted the radial on the chart. I then picked the BAL VOR and plotted that radial on the map and found that I was located over Hampstead, East of the airport. I followed the road back to DMW where we did a simulated engine out.
