This year, Pat N3GWZ and Joe WH6CMI, set up at Pat's QTH to participate in Field Day.  The event began at 1800Z on Saturday, June 23, 2001.  It ended at 1800Z on Sunday.  All HF bands, 6m, 2m and 70cm were used during the event.

Joe brought his trusty Yeasu FT-747.  This rig was dedicated to voice since we didn't have a key/keyer for it.  It was a difficult time working voice as QRP.  However, the Outbacker proved to be a good antenna.  I used an old G5RV (which I could never tune on 80m) as radials for the Outbacker.

I brought my new Kenwood TS-2000.  We worked some Sporadic E to Canada and FL early in the contest on 6m.  The TV antenna was rotated with the StrongArm rotator.  These are cheap and effective, HI.  I spent most of my time chasing CW contesters on 40m throughout the contest.  I attempted to communicate via satellite, but could only hear weak signals, and LOTS of them.  Apparently everyone wanted their bonus points!

We used my 2 laptops, connected via a 100baseT hub to the Internet.  This provided a great way to communicate with my friend Mark KA3UEH via AOL I.M.  Unfortunately, Mark's MP-1 antenna in a Jacksonville Hotel was as good as a dummy load.  Next year, he will be in the area and will work with Joe and I.  The logging program we used was found through a search engine on the Internet.  N2TDK's logger proved to be superb!  It's the only FREE Window's based logger out there that works great.  I'm glad I found this in time for our Multi-Multi operation.  Click here for Kelly's logging program.

As the night fell it got quite cool.  I ended up shutting the doors on the shed and putting on long pants and a sweat shirt.  We worked 80m by feeding the entire coax off the Long Wire terminal on our MFJ-969 tuner, to the Outbacker.  This proved to be effective.  Joe turned in around 12:30AM EDT and I continued to work CW on 40m through 4AM.  I woke up at 10AM, much later than I wanted to, with Joe working 15m stations.  We finished the contest on 40m voice.

Please check out the handful of pictures below, including my "hidden" 2m eggbeater antenna for satellite work.  Two antennas I didn't take pictures of were a 40m dipole and a set of Hamsticks, because they were in the trees.
